‘New ideas in the Najdorf – a Power Play 18 Update’ aims to complement Daniel King’s popular DVD from last year ‘The Sicilian Najdorf - a repertoire for Black’. Such a dynamic and popular opening as the Najdorf is developing the whole time. On this download, Daniel King updates lines that were included on his DVD but also responds to viewers’ requests, considering lines that he omitted from his original repertoire. The lines examined on this update are:
• 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6 6 h3 e5 7 Nde2
• 5….a6 6 Bc4 in combination with the English Attack (Be3, f3 etc)
• 5…a6 6 Be3 and the …a5 variation
• 5…a6 6 Be2 and 9 Re1
• 5 f3 (instead of 5 Nc3)
It isn’t necessary to have seen the original Najdorf DVD to understand the lines examined here – but it would help as they form part of a complete repertoire.

In the meantime Sicilian opening theory has grown so much that many players seek refuge in sub-variations. Whether with the Morra Gambit (2.d4), the Grand Prix Attack (2.f4) or the Closed Sicilian (2.Nc3), White has many interesting possibilities. But Black too can flee after the main move 2.Nf3 into variations which involve much less theory, one of these being the O'Kelly Variation 2...a6!?
=> More products: Sub-variationsI originally watched Power Play 18 back in 2012 when it was released, so New Ideas in the Najdorf was a welcome refresher for many of the strategic themes covered in the earlier DVD. Including the 5.f3 anti-Najdorf was interesting. For my own game experience, the added coverage of 6.h3 was the most practical. As Daniel King notes, the 6.h3 line is being seen more frequently in recent months. The advice to react immediately and decisively with 6…e5 and 7…h5 avoids the serious threats that can result when Black isn’t alert and reacts slowly to the threat of g4 followed by Ne2 and then Ng3.
