The Caro-Kann is considered to be one of the safest and most reliable replies to 1.e4. So it comes as no surprise that in the list of top players who have made use of this defence there are no fewer than four world champions, namely Botvinnik, Petrosian, Karpov and Anand. In addition to that, the Caro-Kann is played by such top players as Adams, Dreev and Bareev. The Moldavian top grandmaster Viktor Bologan presents in twenty videos a repertoire for Black which is easy to assimilate and yet playable at the highest of all levels. In his first six videos you will find recommendations for use against side lines (2.d3, 2.Nc3, 3.f3), the Exchange Variation, the Panov system and the e4-c4-system (holding back with d4). Then in seven videos there follows a detailed presentation of the Advance Variation (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5). The second main section (seven videos) is dedicated to the Classical System (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3/d2 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5), which can be countered with an easily comprehensible and standard setup. In his presentation of the various lines, Bologan lays the emphasis on the opening and early middlegame, and where the variations require it he also provides an evaluation of the endgames which arise from them. At the end of each video there is a short summing up of the system being recommended, in which Bologan goes back over those critical moments which the player of the Caro-Kann absolutely must bear in mind. But in order to make this serious effort, he has buckle down and learn a whole series of sub-variations. On his second Ruy Lopez DVD Viktor Bologan shows how things continue after 3...a6 4.Ba4. Black has some possible deviations before we reach the main lines which are dealt with in Part 3. These include the solid Steinitz Defence and the Archangelsk Variation which has again been brought up to date. In the Open Ruy Lopez quite different types of positions are reached - and White need to understand these too. When White doesn’t want to get involved into tons of theory, when he thinks that he is better than his opponent and can outplay him in a long game, then he uses 1.c4, the opening called English. From the basic principles of chess two moves are ok for Black - 1...e5 and 1...c5, since both are aimed to control the centre. On this DVD Bologan recommends 1...c5 with very strict prescriptions on what to do on different white move orders. This discipline will help Black to have more clear ideas and plans against the white “playing mood”. 14 years ago Bologan started to play 1...c5 and until now he likes this move thanks to the rich type of positions arising after it, thanks to the aggressive and comfortable setups Black can get against the English Opening. “1...c5 is the best for Black!” Video running time: 3 hours 41 min.

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6. The Slav Defence to the Queen’s Gambit has always had a solid reputation, dating right back to the days of Lasker, Alekhine and Capablanca, but it’s only in the last 15 years that the popularity of the opening has really taken off at all levels. Naturally, Slav set-ups and ideas can also be used again the other Flank openings (1.Nf3, 1.c4, 1.b3 etc.) and so by learning the Slav, in a way you are learning a universal approach. Coming to this DVD, we will find ideas for Black which can be used by amateur and professional alike, predominantly featuring the trendy new approach to Black’s armoury involving a very early ...a7-a6. The ...a6 Slav offers Black solidity, dynamism and variety couched in an easy-to-understand setting. Perhaps this is why Grandmasters of the caliber of Kasparov, Shirov, Morozevich, Bologan and Dreev, among many, have all used the opening with success and continue to do so! The Slav with an early ...a6 remains as solid and as flexible in 2010 as it ever was. If anything, the reputation of this line has been enhanced since the original DVD was produced. In this modern update Andrew Martin considers nine, new, interesting and important games, most involving strong grandmasters, which demonstrate that this is one of Black’s best defences to 1.d4.
