Alejandro Ramirez
Alejandro Ramírez, born in San José, Costa Rica, in 1988,
is a Costa Rican-American chess grandmaster and author.
In 2003, at the age of 15, he fulfilled the requirements for the grandmaster title,
which was officially awarded to him in 2004.
This made him the first grandmaster from Central America and the second-youngest grandmaster in the world at the time.
Ramírez represented Costa Rica at the Chess Olympiads in 2002, 2004 and 2008.
At the 2004 FIDE Knockout World Championship,
he was eliminated in the first round by the later champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov.
His greatest tournament successes include winning the 2010 US Open and finishing second at the 2013 US Championship.
Ramírez reached his peak rating of 2601 in 2013.
