The King’s Indian Defence is popularised by none other than Gary Kasparov. His aggressive play stole a lot of hearts in the 80’s and his influence is seen even today. The KID is especially popular with club players. White players often fear it, because black is immediately playing for the white king. The Hungarian variation provides white their own attacking plan. With 5.Nge2 they will play 6.Ng3, close the centre with d5 after …c5/…e5 and start playing on the kingside. Instead of being checkmated, white is the one who checkmates black! This is already the new fashion with the 5.Be2 6.Be3 line or the 5.h3 6.Be3 line and the Hungarian variation fits perfectly in this picture too.
