The Pirc Defence is a highly flexible and double-edged opening with which Black can avoid premature simplification and go for the full point. By first developing his kingside he waits to see how White will deploy his own forces before striking back in the most effective way. The top exponents of the Pirc include Mikhail Gurevich, Alexander Chernin, Jan Timman, Yasser Seirawan, Jonathan Speelman, Zurab Azmaiparpashvili and Alexander Belyavsky; in the past it was a great favourite of Mikhail Botvinnik and Tony Miles. Here Nigel Davies explains the ideas and backs this up by showing exactly how Black should react to White‘s different formations. Video running time: 7 hours.

Olga, a young attractive woman, is living a sad life at the side of her husband, the mediocre Bobby Imbergh. While she is longing for tenderness and attention, he is only interested in chess. During a tournament in Switzerland he has to face the world-class player Boris Fjodorewich. Although preparing intensively, deep inside Bobby Grimbergh knows that he is going to lose this game too, like all others before. Thereupon his wife decides to take matters into her hands, making a plan which will not only help her husband to achieve his first victory but also to get rid of all private worries. A film which will set many a chess player thinking.
The Exchange Variation (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5 4.Bd3) is a simple and easy to learn answer to the Caro-Kann. By clarifying the central tension White gives himself a clear plan of attack using the half open e-file and the e5 square. This is far from easy for Black to meet as Bobby Fischer, Jan Timman, Walter Browne and other leading Grandmasters have demonstrated in their games. Black too has his resources but he needs to know what he's doing. On this DVD you will find a clear explanation of the strategy for both sides as well as answers to popular treatments such as 4...Nc6 5.c3 Qc7. Whilst the main focus is on the White side of this opening you will also find ways for Black to defend.
