The Catalan Under Fire: The 5…c6 Approach

In 2019, Dutch IM Nico Zwirs revamped his opening repertoire, adopting the classical approach with 1…d5. One of the major battlegrounds of the Queen’s Gambit Declined is the Catalan, and against it he chose an ambitious strategy: accept the pawn and hold onto it with …c6 and …b5, aiming for an unbalanced fight from the very start. The resulting positions are dynamic and strategically rich, yet based on a fundamentally solid structure. This line has since been adopted by several top players, often as a powerful surprise weapon to play for a win with Black.

After 5…c6, White has three principal options:

6.a4, preventing …b5

6.0-0, allowing …b5

6.Ne5, immediately trying to regain the pawn

The last option in particular leads to fascinating analysis, including a striking exchange sacrifice on a8.
