Ruslan Ponomariov

Ruslan Ponomariov, born in Horlivka in 1983,
is a Ukrainian chess grandmaster and former FIDE World Champion.
He was awarded the grandmaster title in 1998 at the age of 14, becoming the youngest grandmaster in chess history at the time.
In January 2002, Ponomariov won the FIDE World Championship, which was held in a knockout format.
He defeated fellow Ukrainian Vasyl Ivanchuk 4.5–2.5 in the final, becoming the youngest-ever FIDE World Champion at the age of 18.
He achieved his peak Elo rating of 2764 in July 2011 and reached a career-high world ranking of sixth.
His other achievements include tournament victories in Pamplona in 2005 and Dortmund in 2010,
as well as the Ukrainian Championship title in 2011.
He reached the Chess World Cup final in 2005 and 2009 and the semifinals in 2011.
