The most frequently seen method of meeting the development of the Spanish bishop to b5 is to challenge it at once with 3...a6. There are then two main reactions available to White: he can either retreat the bishop with 4.Ba4, at first maintaining the pressure on the Nc6, or play 4.Bxc6 – the Exchange Variation. But the idea behind 4.Bxc6 is not to win the e5-pawn, because after 4...dxc6 5.Nxe5 the double attack 5...Qd4 would win the pawn back in the most simple way.
