Es fácil de entender porqué la apertura Inglesa es muy popular a todos los niveles, desde jugador de club a gran maestro. En la Inglesa, las blancas juegan 1.c4 y fianchetan el alfil de rey en g2. Como en toda buena apertura, esta lucha por el control del centro y coloca el "alfil inglés" en la diagonal larga g2-a8. Mucha gente considera esta apertura como algo gris, pero es un calificativo poco apropiado: de hecho hay muchos agudos sacrificios de peón y líneas de ataque que se han encontrado recientemente y que dan a la apertura cierta mordacidad.
