Countering the Ruy Lopez with the fighting Modern Steinitz

The Anti-Spanish Inquisition

The Modern Steinitz (1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 d6!?) is an uncompromising counterattacking weapon that lets Black put White under pressure from the very start. With this course, you’ll master two sharp and dynamic approaches: the swashbuckling Siesta Variation (5 c3 f5!) and the fiery Fishing Pole Attack (5 0-0 Bg4 6 h3 h5!).

Sample video: Introduction

Sample video: 5.d4

The course offers twin repertoires—Attacking and Positional—allowing you to switch strategies based on the situation. The Attacking Repertoire dives straight into aggressive King’s Gambit-style assaults and h-file attacks, turning the tables on Ruy Lopez players. Meanwhile, the Positional Repertoire takes the game into Pirc/King’s Indian-like positions, depriving White of their usual attacking chances. Key Lines:

• Attacking Repertoire: Siesta Variation (5 c3 f5!) & Fishing Pole Attack (5 0-0 Bg4 6 h3 h5!)

• Positional Repertoire: Smyslov Variation (5 c3 Bd7 / 5 0-0 Bd7)

Each chapter focuses on Model Illustrative Games to demonstrate plans and tactics into the middlegame and endgame. Plus, test your skills with 10 Tactical and Positional Exercises to perfect your understanding. With these weapons in your arsenal, you’ll strike fear into the hearts of Ruy Lopez players!
