The Fundamentals of Positional Play

After exploring the fundamentals of calculation in his first ChessBase course, International Master Kostya Kavutskiy now turns to the other half of chess mastery: positional play.

The course is divided into three major parts:

1. Strategic Classics

We begin with true masterpieces of strategic chess - instructive model games that every ambitious player should know. These carefully selected examples demonstrate long-term planning, harmonious piece coordination, and the art of converting small advantages.
By studying these classics, you will develop a deeper positional intuition and a clearer understanding of strategic themes.

2. Positional Operations

Next, the course focuses on practical strategic techniques - what can be called positional operations. These are purposeful sequences of moves designed to achieve concrete strategic goals.
Topics include:
  • Piece maneuvers and regrouping
  • The art of exchanging the right pieces
  • Creating and exploiting weaknesses
  • Improving pawn structures
  • Restricting the opponent’s counterplay
You will learn how to think strategically in real positions, not just recognize abstract ideas.

3. Strategy Meets Tactics

Modern chess is rarely purely positional. Even the most strategic positions contain tactical undercurrents. In the final section, the course explores how strategy and tactics merge.
You will learn:
  • How to calculate within a strategic framework
  • How to recognize tactical opportunities arising from positional pressure
  • How to avoid playing “one without the other”
