Jan Werle
Jan Werle, born in Warnsveld in 1984,
is a Dutch chess grandmaster, coach and author.
He earned the International Master title in 2001, followed by the grandmaster title in 2006.
Werle achieved his greatest individual success in 2008,
when he won the European Union Individual Championship in Liverpool.
He reached his peak rating of 2607 in January 2009.
After completing his studies at the University of Groningen with master’s degrees in civil and commercial law in 2011,
he initially worked as a lawyer before deciding to pursue a professional career in chess.
Today, Werle teaches students from around the world online, coaches at schools and continues to compete in tournaments.
He also regularly produces chess courses: for ChessBase, he has created video courses on the Catalan and the French Defence,
and since 2025, he has presented the show The Initiative.
