Abrir con la Chigorin muestra la intención de jugar a ganar desde el inicio. Tras 2...Cc6 las piezas negras se lanzan a la partida presionando la posición de las blancas desde una fase muy temprana. Esta apertura es ideal para el tipo de jugador que busca una apertura poco convencional y de ataque desde el mismísimo arranque de la partida.

Recibe el nombre del gran maestro ruso del sigo XIX, Mikhail Chigorin. Fue uno de los pocos jugadores de elite que prefieren los caballos a los alfiles, lo que muestra la naturaleza poco convencional de la apertura. La Chigorin también la han empleado algunos modernos inconformistas; Alexander Morozevich y Richard Rapport son dos de los más destacados. The occupation of the centre with 1.d4 is, with 1.e4, one of the most popular ways to start a game. If Black meets the move of the queen’s pawn with the symmetrical 1...d5, we have after 2.c4 the Queen’s Gambit. In most cases, Black will now support the pawn on d5, which gives him a share of the centre: either with 2...e6 – the Queen’s Gambit Declined – or 2...c6 – the Slav Defence. A third and very different possibility is 2...dxc4, the Queen’s Gambit Accepted.
