The Sniper – officially created in 2010 - has now been tested with success against top grandmasters and computer programs and still manages to ensure new and creative opening situations full of imbalance - and hence winning prospects for Black. DVD author Charlie Storey has used the Sniper, in conjunction with deep computer analysis, to help gain 145 UK Open victories and has seen his students employ it successfully in European Youth Championships.

The Sniper is a universal opening framework which can be played against all main first white moves - 1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4, 1.f4 and 1.Nf3. It is defined by: 1 (Any White move) …g6 – 2 (Any White move) …Bg7 – 3 (Any White move) …c5 In other words, Black plays 1…g6, 2…Bg7 and 3…c5 against practically anything! And where White prevents this deliberately, good suggestions are given for these ‘Anti – Sniper ’ variations to blow them away. The major benefit to any Sniper practitioner is that they build up a familiarity with the pawn structure in the resulting middle games which helps to prevent errors and saves time in practical play. Start your Sniper training as your first or secondary repertoire – and remember you can also play it as White!

The White Sniper

The White Sniper is characterised by three moves against any black setup: 1.g3 2.Bg2 and 3.c4 though not necessarily in that order. Think of The White Sniper as a Hyper- Accelerated Sicilian Dragon against anything that Black plays.

The White Sniper practitioners’ philosophy is to avoid known drawish theory, whilst keeping a small advantage and stopping Black from having any dangerous counterplay. I prefer to play The White Sniper with 1.g3, allowing Black the option of a large pawn centre with e5 and d5. However, when starting out with the White Sniper learn it first with 1.c4 to cut down on what you need to know. This opening and the Black Sniper recently helped me to secure an International Master Norm at the 2019 British Chess Championship. In the White Sniper FritzTrainer I have ‘Deep Dived’ with the engine, normally to at least depth 30, to help guide my opinions and suggestions.

Semi-Open Games

If after 1.e4 Black does not play 1...e5, then we have the Semi-open Openings. These include the Sicilian (1...c5) which is probably the most popular opening of all nowadays. But there is also a large fan-base for the French (1...e6) and the Caro-Kann (1...c6). In addition, this group of openings also contains some very modern systems such as the Alekhine Defence (1...Nf6), the Scandinavian Defence (1...d5) and the Pirc Defence (1...d6 or 1...g6).
