Französische Verteidigung

Beantwortet Schwarz den Doppelschritt des weißen Königsbauern mit 1...e6, entsteht die Französische Verteidigung. Ihr Name geht zurück auf ein Fernschachmatch zwischen den Städten London und Paris aus 1834, in dem die Franzosen erfolgreich 1...e6 spielten. Im 19. Jahrhundert war der Zug die wichtigste Alternative für Schwarz zu 1...e5 und auch heute belegt er im Ranking der beliebtesten Antworten auf 1.e4 nach Sizilianisch und 1...e5 noch immer Platz drei. Nimmt Weiß die Einladung an und stellt mit 2.d4 den zweiten Bauern ins Zentrum, erfolgt wie im Caro-Kann der Gegenangriff 2...d5.
